Return to zero pulsed modulation schemes are employed to maximize the amount of information recorded in a given number of marker locations. For effecting high density magnetic recordings on a mag netic record member (50) coated with magnetic recording ma terial, a plurality of different recordings may be provided as overlapping domains along a single select magnetic record track, thus multiplying the total amount of information which may be recorded along each record track of multiple track re cord member (50). A magnetic transducer (17) mounted on a support (35) is pivotally driven to variably align its pole pieces and recording or reproduction gaps with a select record track of a record member (50) to provide respective recordings, the domains of each of which are differently aligned from the do mains of the others, permitting such different recording to overlap along the same length of the same track and to be dis cretely detected by suitably aligned pickups.
