摘要:
An OCB mode liquid crystal display element the liquid crystal material of which is easily bend-aligned by the application of a voltage of around several volts, and has a high transition speed. The liquid crystal display element including two substrates (1, 8), a liquid crystal material interposed between the substrates and exhibiting parallel homogeneous alignment, and a negative phase compensating plate is characterized in that the liquid crystal material has a feature expressed by formulae: K11
摘要:
A liquid crystal display having a high transition speed in which bend alignment is formed easily upon application of a voltage of several volts by subjecting an alignment film, which can impart liquid crystal molecules with a pretilt angle of 15-90 DEG , to parallel alignment. A liquid crystal display requiring no transition operation can also be provided. Furthermore, a liquid crystal display of OCB mode excellent in practicality can be provided because of excellent field angle characteristics.
摘要:
A liquid crystal device comprising an OCB liquid crystal element the contrast of which is improved and which performs display while controlling the birefringence of the liquid crystal layer of the element. The reflection of light inside the element is lowered, and the reflection of light attributed to the differences among the refractive indices of the materials at the boundary surfaces of portions inside the element is lowered. The inside lights such as the backlight are made to fall on the substrate perpendicularly as much as possible. Specifically, for example, the black matrix, the active devices provided at least on one side of the substrate, and the wiring on the liquid crystal layer side are made of light absorbing materials.

Before starting a normal display operation of a liquid crystal display of bend alignment type, it is necessary to align the liquid crystal over the display part including all the pixels from the spray-aligned state to the bend-aligned state uniformly. However, conventionally, even when a simple AC voltage is applied, transition sometimes does not occur, or it takes a long time to cause transition to occur and consequently defective displaying due to defective alignment is liable to occur. A method of driving a liquid crystal display including an OBC cell, according to the invention, comprises applying an AC voltage on which a bias voltage is superposed between an electrode (22) and a pixel electrode (23) on substrates before starting a normal display operation and applying a zero or low voltage between the substrates. The two voltage applications are repeated alternately to cause bend alignment transition of all the pixels. After that, the operation is changed to a normal display operation.
