Abstract: In the case where a pair of electrodes are to be formed by irradiating with laser a predetermined position on an electrode assembly disposed in a sealed light emitting space and melt-cutting the same, when irradiating such region to be melt-cut of the electrode assembly with laser from outside the light emitting tube to heat the same and melt-cutting the same, a laser is radiated in a direction forming a predetermined angle theta1 with a plane (S1) which is substantially normal to the axis of the electrode assembly. Thereby, the molten electrode material can be easily controlled as to which side of the pair of electrodes it is to be moved to.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a discharge lamp in which a tungsten rod (16) disposed in a closed emission space is cut by fusion at a predetermined portion by using a laser to form a pair of electrodes. The fusion-cutting step of cutting the tungsten rod (16) to serve as a pair of electrodes is executed after the temperature of the whole arc tube rises to the temperature at which at least an emission material such as mercury (118) sealed in the arc tube evaporate. Thus the arc tube is charged with the vapor of the emission material, and tungsten of the electrode material evaporated by the laser beam fusion is prevented from adhering to the inner wall of the arc tube.

Abstract: A method of producing a discharge lamp capable of preventing the energy loss of a laser emitted from the outside of an arc tube when a pair of electrodes are to be formed by heating and fusing the specified fusion portion of a tungsten bar disposed in a sealed luminous space. Even if the temperature of an arc tube (10) is raised and phosphorus (e.g., mercury) is evaporated to form a film of the phosphorus on the inner wall of the arc tube when a laser (60) is applied once from the outside of the arc tube (10), the method of producing a discharge lamp heats the arc tube (10) with a coil heater (125) to evaporate and remove the formed film, and then applies a laser (60) again.
