    an electronic-mail receiver (9) that receives an electronic-mail including image data in an electronic-mail format;
    a converter that converts the image data in said electronic-mail format into image data in facsimile format;
    a controller (1) that determines whether the received electronic-mail is to be relayed by facsimile transmission;
    a facsimile transmitter (18) that negotiates with a facsimile destination, and transmits the converted image data in the facsimile format to the facsimile destination via a telephone network, when the contoller determines that the received electronic-mail is to be relayed by facsimile transmission; and
    an output system (11) that outputs the image data in the facsimile format when the controller (1) determines that the received electronic-mail is not to be relayed by facsimile transmission, wherein the electronic-mail receiver, the converter, the controller (1), the facsimile transmitter (18), and the output system are integrated in the apparatus.

The electronic mail system may further include a section for receiving image data in an electronic mail, a section for converting the received image data into corresponding received image data of a given facsimile format, a section for expanding the received image data of the facsimile format into expansion-resultant image data, and a section for printing the expansion-resultant image data.
