A magnetic recording tape of the type which comprises a non-magnetic support and a magnetic layer comprised of a magnetic powder and a binder resin and formed on at least one side of the non-magnetic support is described. The tape has a total tickness of from 4.0 to 20.0 µ m and the magnetic layer has a root mean square surface roughness of from 2.0 nm to 5.5 nm with a value of from the root mean square plane to a deepest recess of from 8 to 25 nm. The magnetic layer has a coefficient of friction of not larger than 0.25 and has an amount of the binder resin, which is dissolved out in tetrahydrofluran, of not larger than 4.5 wt% of the magnetic layer. By this the magnetic tape has good surface smoothness, vacuum deposited metallic film, while being imparted with good film strength and runnability. Methods for fabricating such a magnetic tape are also disclosed.
