The video signal input is converted to high-speed reproduction data by a high-speed reproduction data encoder 1. The video signal input is converted to high-speed reproduction data by a formatter 2, which formats the high-speed reproduction data so that the same data is recorded to n tracks; this becomes the recorded data. After the recorded data is input to an error correction encoder 3, it is decoded by a decoder 4 and recorded by a recording head 5 to the magnetic tape 6. During reproduction, the recorded data is reproduced by reproduction head 7 from the magnetic tape 6, and decoded by decoder 8. The decoded data is then error corrected by an error correction decoder 9, and then input to a deformatter 10. The deformatter 10 separates the normal reproduction data from the high-speed reproduction data, and separately outputs both data types. A coding apparatus produces coded data of such a format that after different type video signals are divided into a common signal area and a not-common signal area, the coded data of the common signal area is allocated into one data storage field in a sequence from the front end of the same and the coded data of the not-common signal area is allocated in a reverse sequence from the rear end. Accordingly, such different video signals can successfully be decoded with a decoder designed for processing one particular video signal.

An efficient coding method of coding video signals, speech signals and the like at a lesser amount of bit rate and a decoding method of performing inverse transformation thereof for digital transmission or recording. In accordance with the present invention, in the coding method, a block made up of a plurality of input data for an input signal is used as an encoding unit, a maximum SX and a minimum SN of predictive errors corresponding to differences between the input data of the block and its prediction value are computed, a predetermined value larger than a data (SX - SN) is used as a divisor data OU, modulos E obtained by dividing the respective input data of the block by said divisor data OU are encoded, and additional codes including predictive error information on said data SX, SN and OU as well as encoded codes of said modulos E are both transmitted. In the decoding method, information (the maximum SX and minimum SN of predictive errors) on the predictive error presence range and the divisor data OU as a remainder are obtained directly or indirectly on the basis of the transmitted additional codes. As a result, offsets (integer multiple of the divisor data OU) obtained through divisor in the coding operation can be rightly and uniquely determined in the decoding operation and when the offsets are added to the transmitted modulos E, the input data can be perfectly reproduced.
