A novel polysaccharide S-194 is disclosed composed of principally carbohydrate, about 14% protein, and 9-11% O-acetyl groups. The carbohydrate portion comprises 8.8-9.2% glucuronic acid and the neutral sugars glucose and rhamnose in the approximate molar ratio 4:1. This polysaccharide is produced by a new Alcaligenes species ATCC 31961, in a suitable fermentation medium. It is of particular use in suspension fertilizers, although other uses involving increasing the viscosity of aqueous systems are also contemplated.

Heteropolysaccharide S-198 is used in various aqueous media specifically formulated for use as hydraulic or lubricating fluids, oil well treating fluids or flowable pesticides.

Heteropolysaccharide S-184 is a new heteropolysaccharide. It is composed principally of carbohydrate, from 12% to 16% protein and from 3.0% to 4.5% (calculated as acetic acid) acyl groups, the carbohydrate portion containing from about 7% to 16% uronic acid and the neutral sugars mannose, glucose and galactose in the approximate molar ratios of 1:3:5. It can be prepared by fermentation of a newAlcaligenes species, ATCC 53160. It has valuable properties as a thickening, suspending and stabilizing agent in aqueous solutions and is especially valuable for use in foods.

Heteropolysaccharide S-657 is a new heteropofysac- charide. It is composed principally of carbohydrate, about 12% protein and about 7% (calculated as O-acetyl) acyl groups, the carbohydrate portion containing about 19% glucuronic acid, and the neutral rhamnose and glucose in the approximate molar ratio of 2:1. It can be prepared by fermentation of a new strain of XeMhamonas campestris, ETCC 53159. It has valuable properties as a thickening, suspending and stabilizing agent in aqueous solutions and is especially valuable for use in well-treating fluids.
