The gel is useful for fracturing and placing propping agents within a subterranean formation. The gel developes a high viscosity (due to delayed crosslinking) when in the formation and has pumping characteristics in turbulent flow similar to those of water.

A gellable composition comprises (1) gellan, (2) xanthan gum, and (3) a galactomannan and/or glucomannan gum capable of producing a gel in combination with xanthan gum, especially carob, tara, cassia or konjac gum. Preferably the ratio of gellan: xanthan; gellan: galactomannan or glucomannan; and xanthan: galactomannan or glucomannan each lie within the range of from 5:1 to 1:5. In an aqeuous system the gum mixture is preferably present in a total amount of from 0.1 to 5% by weight based on the weight of the aqueous phase.

Blends of low-acetyl gellan gum with xanthan gum and a galactomannan gum, preferably locust bean gum, contain low-acetyl gellan: (xanthan/galactomannan) in the ratios by weight 95:5 to 5:95 in which the ratio xanthan: galactomannan ranges from 4:1 to 1:4. The combination of xanthan gum and locust bean gum modifies the brittleness of the gellan gum gel and provides a useful range and diversity of gel textures which find particular utility in gelled food formulations. In place of locust bean gum, konjak, tara, or Cassia gums may be used.

A gelling agent consisting essentially of a mixture of 30 - 90 wt. parts of xanthan gum and 10 - 70 wt. parts of konjakmannan is disclosed. The gelling agent is used in an aqueous solution having pH of 3.0 - 12.0. A quantity of the gelling agent is usually in a range of 0.2~4.2wt.% of the final product to be prepared. Any additive may be incorporated if necessary. Gel produced by utilizing the gelling agent has excellent hardness, elasticity, thermoreversibility and water-holding property.
