There are included wavelength branching means (12) for branching a wavelength-multiplexed incident photon pulse sequence for each of wavelengths; a plurality of photon detectors (13-1, ···, 13-n) for detecting the photons as branched by the wavelength branching means (12); bias applying means (14) for applying gate pulses, as bias voltages, to the respective ones of the plurality of photon detectors (13-1, ···, 13-n) in conformity with the timings at which the output lights of the wavelength branching means (12) are incident on the plurality of photon detectors (13-1, ···, 13-n); and data processing means (15) for converting the detection signals from the plurality of photon detectors (13-1, ···, 13-n) to time series signals.

An optical transmitter and an optical communication system comprising it imparted with a wavelength independent function. The optical communication system comprises an optical modulator (11), a photocoupler (12) for branching the optical output signal from the optical modulator, a cross-point monitor means (13) for receiving one optical signal branched by the photocoupler and monitoring the cross-point of the optical output signal from the optical modulator, a reference value setting means (14) for setting such a bias reference value to be imparted to the optical modulator as the cross-point becomes constant based on the output signal from the cross-point monitor means, and a bias circuit (15) for applying a predetermined bias to the optical modulator based on the bias reference value outputted from the reference value setting means.
