A color-developing composition comprises a multivalent-metal-modified salicylic acid resin (Resin A) and a polycondensation resin (resin B) at a weight ratio of 90-30 to 10-70. Resin A is composed of 5-35 mole% of a structural unit (I) and 65-95 mole% of at least one structural unit (II) or 65-95 mole% of a coupled structural unit of at least one unit (II) and at least one unit (III) and has a weight-average molecular weight of 350-5,000. Resin B is composed of the unit (II) and/or the unit (III) and has a weight-average molecular weight of 350-5,000.

The water-base coating formulation comprises as essential components (a) microcapsules which have a synthetic resin as a wall-forming material and (b) a reaction product obtained by polymerizing at least one water-soluble vinyl monomer (B) in the presence of a high polymer latex (A) having a glass transition point of 60°C or lower. The latex (A) and vinyl monomer (B) are used at a solid weight ratio of 3:97 - 90:10. The coating formulation can provide a microcapsule-coated layer having significantly-improved pressure resistance and frictional stability without need for a stilt, and can be applied successfully at a high speed. The coating formulation can form the basis of carbonless copying and/or recording paper for instance of self-contained character incorporating both a dye precursor and a color developer.

Disclosed are a crystal of a fluoran compound having the formula (I) comprising exhibiting high peaks at diffraction angles (2ϑ) of 7.5° and 17.0° and relatively high peaks at diffraction angles (2ϑ) of 15.1° , 19.1° , 21.5° and 25.3° in an X-ray diffraction diagram by the Cu-Kα beam and a crystal of a fluoran compound having the formula (II) comprising exhibiting high peaks at diffraction angles (2ϑ) of 5.5° and 19.2° in an X-ray diffraction diagram by the Cu-Kα beam, which is useful as a color forming compound in recording materials.
