Zeolites are synthesised from an aqueous reaction mixture containing sources of silica, alumina, alkali metal and nitrogenous organic directing agent in two stages, a lower-temperature nucleation stage and a higher temperature crystallisation stage. The directing agent may be supplemented by an alcohol or diol. Catalysts comprising zeolites so synthesised are of particular value in alkylation of benzene and dealkylation of ethylbenzene.

There is disclosed an alumino- or borosilicate zeolite having an SiO, to AI,O, or B,O, molar ratio of 5-500 and the x-ray diffraction pattern shown in Table I of the specification. The zeolite, which is useful as a catalyst in organic conversions, can be produced from an aqueous reaction mixture containing a 2-(hydroxyalkyl)trialkylammonium cation.
