A hydrocracking process for gas oils and other high boiling petroleum fractions using an initial hydrotreating step to remove heteroatom impurities, is carried out at hydrogen partial pressures below 10,000 kPa using a hydrocracking catalyst based on zeolite beta. The process produces highly paraffinic, low pour point distillate products useful as jet fuels and diesel fuels. The process is capable of operating at high conversions with low catalyst aging rates and low specific hydrogen consumption.

The catalyst comprises a hydrogenation function such as palladium and a Group IIA form e.g. Be Mg, or IIIB, form e.g. Sc, Y, of zeolite ZSM-20. In an optional further step the paraffin stream is thermally cracked to recover ethylene and propylene.
