A nut and panel assembly useful for pierce, clinch and weld nuts used in automotive applications, wherein the nut bore must be masked or blocked during paint application, including electrodeposition coatings. A generally cylindrical polymeric plug or blocking member (10) is press fitted into the nut bore (18) preferably prior to attaching the nut (16) to the metal panel (22). Following installation of the nut (16) in the panel (22), the plug (10) masks the nut bore (18) during the later coating operation. The disclosed plug or blocking member (10) includes an axial configured cavity (12,14) and the plug (10) may then be removed following coating by threading a bolt having an end protuberance configured to be received in the plug axial cavity (12,14) into the nut bore (18). The plug (10) is then retained on the bolt protuberance following removal from the threaded bore (18).

A self-clinching nut fastener (1), which may be used as a pierce nut having a central cylindrical pilot portion (4), an annular flange portion (6) surrounding the pilot portion (4), having a generally flat annular panel-supporting end face (30) and an annular groove (26) defined in the flange end face surrounding the pilot. The bottom wall (7,34) of the groove (5,26) includes a projecting convex annular protuberance (3,6) which extends circumferentially around the pilot and radially from the pilot to a midportion of the groove bottom wall spaced from the groove outer wall (6) and the groove outer wall (6) is inclined inwardly toward the pilot to define a restricted opening to the annular groove. The installation apparatus includes a die button having a projecting annular clinching lip (20) configured to be received within the nut groove. The method of installation includes locating a panel (12) on the die button lip (20) with the die button lip coaxially aligned with the nut groove (5,26), then driving the nut (1) against the panel (12) to deform an annular portion of the panel into the nut groove (5,26) and against the annular protuberance to deform the panel portion beneath the inclined outer groove wall (6) and preferably radially inwardly against the pilot portion (4). In the most preferred embodiment, the protuberance comprises a plurality of semi-circular protuberances (11) which are integral with the pilot portion (4) and extend radially to beyond the radial center of the grooved bottom wall and the panel (12) is deformed against the groove bottom wall into radial channels between the spaced protuberances preventing relative rotation of the nut on the panel.
