The system is capable of unlocking restricted extended features and functionalities embodied within the reading of one or more feature/functionality-unlocking programming-type bar code symbols. Also, when used on a countertop-surface, the system is capable of illuminating objects located within the working distance of the system, while minimizing annoyance to the operator, as well as others in the vicinity thereof during system operation.
