To allow shortening the horizontal length for sheet-fed duplex printing while preventing a printing face of the sheet of paper printed on upstream in its conveyance direction from becoming soiled by toner transferred from a printing face of sheet of paper printed on downstream in its conveyance direction, a sheet-fed duplex printer comprises a pair of impression cylinders 6a, 6b each provided on a peripheral surface thereof with a paper gripper for gripping a sheet of paper, one of the impression cylinders in rotational contact with the other impression cylinder disposed downstream in a direction of rotation of and obliquely below the one impression cylinder. The two impression cylinders are synchronously rotated so that the regions of rotational contact thereof both move downwards. The sheet of paper reversing its printing face when the sheet of paper conveyed following a peripheral surface of the one impression cylinder is conveyed to follow that of the other impression cylinder. A first electrophotographic printing unit 7a is disposed opposite to a peripheral surface area of the one impression cylinder which area is upstream in the direction of rotation of the one impression cylinder from the region of rotational contact between the one and the other impression cylinder for printing on one face of the sheet of paper being conveyed following the peripheral surface of the one impression cylinder. A second electrophotographic printing unit 7b is disposed opposite to a peripheral surface area of the other impression cylinder which area is downstream in the direction of rotation of the other impression cylinder from the region of rotational contact between the one and the other impression cylinder for printing on the other face of the sheet of paper being conveyed following the peripheral surface of the other impression cylinder. And, a cleaning unit 23 for impression cylinder is disposed opposite to, and adapted to clean, a peripheral surface area of the other impression cylinder, the peripheral surface area of the other impression cylinder being downstream in the direction of its rotation from a position thereon at which the sheet of paper conveyed following the surface of the other -impression cylinder is transferred therefrom downstream in the direction of conveyance of the sheet of paper.

An electrophotographic sheet-fed front/back printing machine is disclosed which not only allows duplex printing but also can be installed in a reduced space. In the proposed electrophotographic sheet-fed front/back printing machine, sheets of paper fed from a sheet supply (10) is fed out by a sheet transport conveyer (20) onto an impression cylinder (31) of an electrophotographic printing section (30) in which they are printed each on its one side. A sheet printed on its one side is turned over from front to back by a sheet turnover transport unit (60). The sheet printed on the one side and turned over is allowed to fall and supplied onto the sheet transport conveyer (20). The sheet printed on the one side and tuned over is fed again onto the impression cylinder (31) and printed on the remaining other side. Sheets printed on their both sides are transported by a printed-sheet transport unit (40) to a print output receptacle (50) in which they are received.

A fixing apparatus is provided whereby a sheet of paper transported at high speed can be heated and thereby fixed in a stabilized state and without causing sheet crinkling. The apparatus includes a fixing drum (9) having a heating heater internally equipped therein for heating a peripheral surface thereof. The fixing drum is positioned spaced part and downstream from a sheet delivery site at a downstreammost side of printing units (1a) and (1b), and is adapted to rotate at a peripheral speed identical to a speed of travel of the sheet of paper in the printing units. A first sprocket (10) is positioned adjoining the sheet delivery site at the downstreammost side of the printing units. Also, a second sprocket (11) is positioned coaxially with the fixing drum, the second sprocket having a pitch circle diameter approximately identical to a circumferential diameter of the fixing drum and being adapted to rotate integrally with the fixing drum. And, a conveyer chain (12) having a gripper (13) is wound around and engaging with the first and second sprockets to wind and convey a sheet of paper on a peripheral surface of the fixing drum upon gripping in turn with the gripper the sheet of paper traveling from the sheet delivery site at the downstreammost side. Further, a pressure member is provided that is adapted to be urged into rotational contact under pressure with a peripheral surface of the fixing drum.
