摘要: A control signal generating circuit generates control signals at times dependent on variable time intervals defined between respective start and stop signals (104, 100). When applied to a character printer to which documents such as checks are fed for printing, the variable time intervals are dependent on the document speed and the control signals control print hammer operation such that uniform character spacing is achieved. The start signal (104) initiates the up-counting of clock pulses in an up/down counter (112) which after a predetermined count causes a control gate (122) to produce a signal. Counting continues in an upward mode until the stop signal (100) occurs, whereafter the counter (112) counts downwards until the predetermined count is reached thereby causing the control gate (122) to terminate the signal produced thereby and thereby enable production of the desired control signal.

摘要: There is disclosed an apparatus and method for reading bar codes in which a linear array of sensing devices (44) is positioned adjacent a moving document (58) on which is located a plurality of dot matrix printed coded bars (54). Each of the sensing devices (44) is positioned so as to sense one of the matrix dots (56) which form the coded bar (54) and output an analog signal whose signal level varies directly in accordance with the ink intensity of the sensed dot (56). Signals are then amplified, filtered and converted into binary signals having either a high or a low level depending on whether or not the analog signals exceed a predetermined threshold value. The binary signals are then examined and, if a predetermined number of high level binary signals are produced and if there is not more than one location in the array of sensing devices (44) in which two devices generating a high level signal is separated by a device generating a low level signal, then a control signal is produced indicating a valid bar. These signals are then used in decoding the bars (54) sensed.
This arrangement reliably detects the presence of a dot matrix printed bar on a document (58) and avoids false sensing of a bar where only ink splatter and smudges are present.

摘要: A system and method for detecting the presence of two or more overlapping documents using a capacitive sensing device through which the documents are arranged to pass. A document sensing signal (42) generated in response to the detection of one or more documents is delayed by the capacitance of the sensing device which varies according to whether one or more than one document passes therethrough. The delayed signal (54) is applied to comparison means (56) together with the original document sensing signal (42) and a multiple document detect signal (70) is produced when the output of said comparison means (56) is indicative of a delay in excess of a certain amount.

摘要: A print hammer assembly for an impact printer includes a hammer (19) having a head portion (47) positioned at one end of a beam (39) which is mounted at a pivot (41) for movement of the hammer between a rest position and a print position. Operation of the hammer (19) is controlled by first and second windings (11, 13) wound around two cores (15, 17) respectively positioned adjacent two flanges (43, 45) of magnetic material provided on the beam (39) on either side of the pivot (41). A drive pulse applied to the first winding (11) pivots the hammer (19) to its print position and a restoring pulse applied to the second winding (13) restores the hammer to its rest position, the restoring action being assisted by a spring (63). In order to avoid interference between the magnetic fields produced by the two windings (11,13) the two cores (15, 17) are spaced apart and the drive pulse is arranged to terminate before the commencement of the restoring pulse.

摘要: A print hammer in an impact printer comprises a hammer body (13) having an end portion (15) containing a cavity (17) passing therethrough, an annular, separable compressible member (19), and a separable hammer tip (23) having a flat first face (31) for impact printing and having an elongated member (25) which passes through the compressible member (19) and the cavity (17). A removable fastener (29) secures the elongated member (25) to the end portion (15) to hold the compressible member (19) between the end portion (15) and second face of the hammertip (23) opposite said first face 31. When the hammer tip (23) strikes against a printing surface, the subsequent compression of the compressible member (19) provides a combination of optimum force and contact time for the best inktransferfrom a medium such as a ribbon to a print paper. Whenever the print quality deteriorates, the fastener (29) can be temporarily removed to replace either or both of the hammer tip (23) and compressible member (19).
