A constant energy drive circuit for an inductive load, e.g. an electromagnetic print hammer has a chopping circuit including a comparator (19) which cycles a switch means (10. 14) connecting the energizing coil (11) of the print hammer to an unregulated power supply. Changes in the drive voltage (V1) of the unregulated source are compensated for by altering the switching rate of the switch means by adjusting the amplitude of a reference signal (V R ) applied to the comparator. The reference signal adjustment is inverse to changes in the drive voltage.

A control signal generating circuit generates control signals at times dependent on variable time intervals defined between respective start and stop signals (104, 100). When applied to a character printer to which documents such as checks are fed for printing, the variable time intervals are dependent on the document speed and the control signals control print hammer operation such that uniform character spacing is achieved. The start signal (104) initiates the up-counting of clock pulses in an up/down counter (112) which after a predetermined count causes a control gate (122) to produce a signal. Counting continues in an upward mode until the stop signal (100) occurs, whereafter the counter (112) counts downwards until the predetermined count is reached thereby causing the control gate (122) to terminate the signal produced thereby and thereby enable production of the desired control signal.

According to this invention, a voltage signal generating circuit (12, 16, 30, 33) generates a voltage signal which is in synchronism with a print timing signal produced when a printing head is driven. A detection circuit (15a, 15b, 16, 30, 33) detects variations in a power source voltage for driving the printing head. A driving pulse outputting circuit (13, 17, 30, 33) is adapted to output a driving pulse signal with a pulse generating timing and pulse width corresponding to variations in the power source voltage, on the basis of the voltage signal output from the voltage signal generating circuit (15a, 15b, 16,30,33) and detection signal output from the detection circuit (15a, 15b, 16, 30, 33). A driving circuit (14,40) drives the printing head, with the printing timing and printing pressure being based on the driving pulse signal.

In a printing device employing a solenoid (116) for driving a printing hammer (110), provided are switching member (126) for ON/OFF operating electric current flowing through the solenoid coil, voltage generating member (128) for generating voltage in accordance with the electric current, converting member (130) for converting the generated voltage to a digital value, chopping member (134) for comparing the converted digital value with a predetermined comparison value, while for turning on the switching member (126) when the converted value is smaller than the predetermined comparison value and turning off the switching member (126) when the converted value is larger than the predetermined comparison value, detecting member (128) for detecting voltage relating to a driving operation of said solenoid (116), and controlling member (134) for controlling the predetermined comparison value so as to be varied in an amount based upon the detected voltage. Thus, the current flowed through the solenoid is controlled so as not to be largely varied.
