An object of the invention is to provide a spark plug capable of suppressing the occurrence of cracking with a grain boundary oxidized in an outer layer as the starting point under a cold and/or hot environment while decreasing temperature increase of a ground electrode. A spark plug of the invention including a center electrode and a ground electrode having a gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode in which the ground electrode has at least a core portion and an outer layer covering the core portion, and the core portion is formed from a material having higher thermal conductivity than that of the outer layer, wherein at least a portion in which thickness of the outer layer is 0.5 mm or less exists at a cross-section perpendicular to a direction in which the ground electrode is extended, and the composition of the electrode material forming the outer layer is as follows: Ni is 96 mass% or more, total of at least one kind selected from a group consisting of Y and rare earth elements is 0.05 mass% or more, Al is 0.5 mass% or less, and Si is 0.5 mass% or more and 1.5 mass% or less (here, the total of Ni, Y, rare earth elements, Al, Si does not exceed 100 mass%).

In this spark plug where the ground electrode is relatively small in thickness, it is possible to improve both of the deformation resistance and wear resistance of the ground electrode.

According to the present invention, at least one of a center electrode or a ground electrode is produced by mixing a matrix metal with carbon so that the carbon content of the resultant mixture is adjusted to 80 vol.% or less; subjecting the mixture to powder compacting or sintering, to thereby form a core; placing the core in a cup formed of nickel or a metal containing nickel as a main component; and subjecting the cup to cold working. The thus-produced electrode exhibits favorable thermal conductivity and good heat dissipation, by virtue of the small difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the core and an outer shell. Therefore, a spark plug including the electrode exhibits excellent durability.

[Objective] An objective of the present invention is to provide a technique which can improve resistance to spark ablation of an electrode tip whose predominant component is Pd and restrains occurrence of separation and cracking of the electrode tip. [Means for solution] The electrode tip located at an distal end of an electrode of a spark plug contains Pd as a predominant component in an amount of 40 wt.% or more; at least one element of Ir, Ni, Co, and Fe, wherein, when the tip contains Ir, the amount of Ir is 0.5 wt.% to 20 wt.%, and when the tip contains at least one element of Ni, Co, and Fe, the amount of the at least one element is 0.5 wt.% to 40 wt.%; and at least one element of Pt, Re, Rh, and Ru in a total amount of 5 wt.% to 40 wt.%, wherein when the tip contains at least one element of Re, Rh, and Ru, the amount of the at least one element is 10 wt.% or less, and when the tip contains Pt, the amount of Pt is 16 wt.% to 40 wt.%.
