A control circuit unit 31 for use connected to an NOx sensor 1 is disclosed. A first pump element control circuit 56 controls a voltage applied to a first pump element 3 so as to control the level of a partial pressure of oxygen contained in a first processing chamber 9 such that an output voltage of an oxygen concentration detection element becomes substantially constant. A first pump current is detected through use of a current detection resistor 101 and is then output via an A/D converter circuit 65. A second pump element control circuit 57 applies a constant voltage to a second pump element 5 in such a direction as to pump out oxygen from a second processing chamber 10. A second pump current is detected through use of a current detection resistor 107 and is then output via an A/D converter circuit 65. A detection signal indicative of the first pump current is used for determination of the oxygen concentration of a measurement gas. The detection signal indicative of the first pump current and a detection signal indicative of the second pump current are used for determination of the nitrogen oxides concentration of the measurement gas.

A spark discharge current Isp generated upon spark discharge of a spark plug 10 flows through a charge diode 28, a capacitor 24, and a diode 22, which form a closed loop together with the spark plug 10 and a secondary winding L2 of an ignition coil 12 that constitutes an ignition apparatus 2. As a result, a Zener diode 26 connected in parallel to these components generates a Zener voltage Vz and thereby charges the capacitor 24. When a preset wait time has elapsed after the ignition timing for starting spark discharge, the discharge switch 30 short-circuits the opposite ends of the charge diode 28 to discharge the capacitor 24, so that a high voltage having a polarity opposite that in the case of spark discharge is applied to the spark plug. A method and apparatus for detecting a functional condition of an NOx occlusion catalyst (S3) using an NOx sensor (2). In order to compensate for variations in oxygen concentration of the exhaust gas which would otherwise affect the detected NOx concentration downstream of the NOx occlusion catalyst (S3), a relative value is calculated as the difference between the detected NOx concentration and the value of the detected NOx concentration initially after start of operation control of an internal combustion engine (S1) at a lean air-fuel ratio. The occlusion capability of the NOx occlusion catalyst (S3) is judged to have deteriorated when an increase in the relative value exceeds a predetermined value. On the other hand, the NOx occlusion catalyst (S3) is judged to have suffered an anomaly when the rate of increase in the relative value becomes greater than a predetermined allowable value.

[Objective] An object is to provide a sensor control apparatus and a sensor-control-apparatus control method which can reduce variation in startup time among a plurality of times of execution of detection processing, in consideration of variation in output characteristic among a plurality of gas sensors. [Means for Solution] In a sensor control apparatus, before drive control (S55 to S80) is started, preliminary control is executed so as to supply a constant current to a second oxygen pump cell over a constant time, to thereby control to a constant level the amount of oxygen pumped from a second measurement chamber to the outside of the second measurement chamber (S40 to 50). The preliminary control is executed under control conditions of the sensor control apparatus which are determined for each gas sensor and are associated with the amount of oxygen pumped from the second measurement chamber to the outside thereof. The control conditions bring into a target range the concentration correspondence value calculated after start of the drive control which is started after the preliminary control is executed in a state in which a reference gas having a known concentration is introduced into the gas sensor.
