A fluid pressure operated piston engine assembly (10), such as a pump assembly, including a fluid pressure operated piston engine (12) and a fluid valve (14) for coupling fluid under pressure to alternative portions of the piston chamber of the piston engine. The fluid valve (14) includes a valve spool (26) which is translated to effect the alternative modes of coupling pressurized fluid to the piston chamber (18). The translation is accomplished by a shifter assembly (80) having a shifter rod (82) attached to the valve spool (26). The shifter rod (82) includes a pair of diametrically opposed magnets (100,108) attached thereto. A fork (86) is attached to the piston engine drive shaft (22) at one end and is mounted for limited movement along the shifter rod (82) between the pair of magnets (100,108) of the shifter rod (82). The interaction between the flux generated by a magnet (96) carried by the fork (86) with one of the magnets (100,108) of the shifter rod (82) causes the shifter rod (82), and in turn the valve spool (26), to shift from one position to another, thereby re-directing the flow of fluid to the piston chamber (18) to effect the reversal of direction of travel of the piston (20) and its associated drive shaft (22).

An apparatus for spraying molten thermoplastic adhesive in which the outside of a solid stream of adhesive ejected from a nozzle is impacted by atomizing air to form adhesive droplets and the droplets are then directed by pattern-shaping air into a predetermined area of a substrate. The flow rate and velocity of the atomizing air and pattern-shaping air is independently controlled by separate regulating valves to permit variation of the size of the adhesive droplets formed and the width of the pattern of droplets deposited on a substrate. Control valves are provided to sequence the flow of adhesive discharged from the nozzle with the flow of atomizing and pattern-shaping air such that the flow of atomizing and pattern-shaping air is initiated before the flow of adhesive from the nozzle begins and after the flow of adhesive therefrom is terminated.
