The present invention relates generally to compounds such as alkylglycerol and alkoxyglycerol for use in increasing the endogenous level of plasmalogens in a mammal. In particular, these compounds are used for increasing the endogenous plasmalogen level to a level greater than the level in healthy mammals. The compositions and the methods of using the compositions enhance absorption of fatty acids and the fat-soluble nutrients to address nutritional deficiencies due to maldigestion.
