The present invention concerns the removal/reduction of the directionality or anisotropy of a surface and making the surface specular on a substrate material consisting of aluminium or an aluminium alloy. The central process stages are: chemical polishing, chemical etching, preferably using phosphoric acid, and electrochemical polishing, preferably using phosphoric acid. Alternatively, the chemical polishing could be replaced by another chemical etching and electrochemical polishing. The present invention has made it possible to produce bright surfaces with good optical qualities on substrate materials of inexpensive Al alloys which may contain recycled aluminium. With the improved process, it is possible to achieve a considerable increase in brightness both relatively (from the starting material to the finished material) and absolutely.

Method for making an absorber coating for solar heating and a coating as such to be applied on a metal substrate, in particular a coating to be applied on a thin aluminium metal sheet. The coating is of the sol-gel type based on a metal oxide precursor where pigment particles are intimately mixed into the precursor followed by application of the mixed sol lacquer on the substrate and thereafter reaction in humid air at a required temperature to obtain the sol-gel coating. The precursor may preferably be a CeO2 (NO3) based sol with preferably 20% CeO2 having a particle size of 10-20 nm and a pH of 1.5. Further the pigment may be a manganese ferrite black spinel, Mn3Cu2FeO8.

Process for the production of magnesium containing aluminium alloys, in particular magnesium containing rolled aluminium strip or sheet material, The process is characterized by the following steps: E. rolling to final thickness of the aluminium web F. levelling of the aluminium web G. electrochemical degreasing of the aluminium web H. soft annealing of the aluminium web. The electrochemical degreasing is done by alternating current (AC) processing of the aluminium sheet material in hot sulphuric acid resulting in a thin aluminium oxide layer on the surface of between 10 - 20nm. The hereby degreased material give excellent adhesion since there is no magnesium oxide on the surface.
