    摘要: Narrowband subscriber terminals (40, 52, 58) of different narrowband networks are interconnected via a broadband network (48) that supports dissimilar signalling protocols to those maintained on the respective narrowband networks (40, 52, 58). A call server in a first narrowband network (40), in response to a call (100) from a first subscriber terminal (12) to a second subscriber terminal (68) in a second but different narrowband network (52), selects a phantom trunk (202) between the two networks. The phantom trunk has a unique circuit identity, which circuit identity is used in a first instance to relay to the second network an address of the second subscriber terminal (68). Then, in a second instance, the unique circuit identity is used to relay to the second network an address of the first subscriber terminal (68). By recognising that two connection requests have been received at opposite ends of the same phantom trunk, a processor in the second network is able to determine that a direct connection between the first and second subscriber terminals is required through the broadband network (48).

    摘要: In a broadband network comprising a plurality of edge switches interconnected by a plurality of tandem switches, IP packet data is routed by determining from each packet whether that packet forms part of a flow of packets. Where a packet is determined to be part of a flow, it is segmented into minicells for transmission over a permanent virtual channel established across the network for that flow. Where a packet is not determined to be part of a flow, a destination edge switch is identified for that packet which is then transported to that edge switch via a default permanent virtual channel. Permanent virtual channels for new flows are established at the network periphery by defining a succession of nodes and virtual channels (VCs) to be used to reach the destination of that flow.

    摘要: In an ATM network a flexible AAL1 processor is connected to a similar AAL1 processor by a virtual circuit. This virtual circuit has nx64kb/s capacity wherein each 64kb/s channel or a Px64kb/s subset of the capacity can be used for a separate call. The virtual circuit behaves similarly to trunk groups within present day digital networks and it is therefore termed a Virtual Trunk Group. Many Virtual Trunk Groups can be connected between the same two endpoints and contained within a virtual path thus forming a Virtual Route. The network is provided with a mechanism which allows the nx64kb/s capacity to be changed by a managed process which ensures that established calls are not affected by the change of capacity. This change of capacity is performed in such a way that the clock systems of the two AAL1 processors are able to behave in the normal manner for synchronised or plesiochronous switching networks without incurring additional frame slips in the AAL1 data stream. Frame slips due to the behaviour of the clock systems are still processed in the normal manner.
