The first transparent coating (6) carries a plurality of surface structures (8), which are invisible to the unaided eye but may be read out by a suitable detection device. The second transparent coating (7) is arranged below the first transparent coating (6) and acts as a barrier preventing the first coating (6), during manufacture, to seep into the underlying structures. Inkjet printing is used for the application of the first transparent coating (6).

Two sides of each particle (1; 1') have different magnetic and/or electric polarizations, and one of the two sides or another side of each particle (1') is provided with a first coating (2). By applying an electric field and/or a magnetic field, the particles (1; 1') and thus the coatings (2) thereof can be aligned, allowing specific patterns to be created. Said patterns can be read in order to check the authenticity. The invention further relates to a security document with such a security element, to a method for producing such a security element (5, 5.1, 5.2), and to a method for checking the authenticity of a security document (8) with such a security element (5, 5.1, 5.2).

To easily detect a removal of the foil element (6) using conventional detection devices, markings (4, 14, 15) intersecting with the foil element (6) are printed onto the top surface (7) of the foil element (6), the bottom surface (8) of the foil element (6), or onto the substrate (1), thus that they are removed together with the foil element (6).
