A process is disclosed for detecting states of shock and for following the therapy of state of shock patients. For that purpose, the cyclophiline concentration in the patient's blood is determined by (a) enzymological methods, (b) immunological detection methods by means of specific antibodies, (c) peptidic chemical methods, (d) radiochemical methods, and is used to evaluate the severity of the state of shock. Also disclosed is the use of medicaments, biological active substances and physicochemical methods that reduce active cyclophiline concentration in the blood of state of shock patients for the therapy of states of shock, in particular septic shock, post-operative shock and toxic shock.
