An automated high throughput apparatus, method and system for seed sampling is provided. The seed sampling system includes an ablation subsystem having a controlled cutting path and a seed handling subsystem comprising a staging system having a plurality of seed staging positions for staging a batch of seed in a sequential manner, and a carrier system for simultaneously presenting seed staging positions at the cutting path for removing a sample portion from each seed in the batch. A method of this invention includes providing ablation means having a controlled cutting path, automatically staging a batch of seed at a plurality of staging positions in a sequential manner, simultaneously presenting the batch of seed at the cutting path, and removing a sample portion from each seed in the batch.

An apparatuses, methods and systems for creating, handling and collecting seed portions are highly beneficial. The apparatus (10) includes a carrier (14) having one or more carrying positions (22) adapted to carry a seed (34). The carrying positions having a seed orienter (24) adapted to orient the seed (34) relative to the carrying position in the carrier for creating seed portions therefrom. The method includes taking a carrier (14) having one or more carrying positions (22), orienting a seed relative to the carrying position in the carrier, ablating the seed with a seed ablation device (36), and communicating seed portions through a manifold (12) into a compartment layer (18). The system includes a seed manifold (12) adapted to dock thereon a seed (3) carrier (14) having pre-positioned and pre-oriented seed (34) therein. Seed and seed portions removed from the seed in the carrier are communicated into a collector (104) and compartment layer (18) respectively using the seed manifold (12).

A system for management of seed on an individual seed basis includes an evaluation subsystem for evaluating individual non-destructively sampled seeds to provide evaluation data for the seeds, a selection subsystem for selecting a subset of the individual seeds at least partially based on the evaluation data, and a planting subsystem for planting the subset of individual seeds.
