Provided are a graphite material suitable as an electrode material for nonaqueous electrolyte secondary batteries, a carbonaceous material for battery electrodes, and secondary batteries which exhibit excellent charge-discharge cycle characteristics and excellent severe-current-load characteristics. A graphite material which has specific sizes of optically anisotropic and isotropic structures, a specific content ratio between both structures, and various orientation of crystallization; and a carbonaceous material for battery electrodes which is made using the graphite material and which exhibits a large discharge capacity and a small irreversible capacity with the severe-current-load characteristics and cycle characteristics being kept at high levels.

The present invention provides a graphite composite material obtained by mixing graphite material 1 having diversity in the sizes of optical anisotropic structure and optical isotropic structure, the ratio thereof, and crystal direction, and graphite material 2 having a rhombohedron structure, which is different from graphite material 1 and has an average interplanar spacing d 002 of plane (002) of 0.3354 nm to 0.3370 nm measured by the powder X-ray diffraction method and Lc of 100 nm or more. Use of the graphite composite material in the electrodes for the secondary battery can make the secondary battery be excellent in charge-discharge cycle characteristics and the large current load characteristics.

A carbonaceous material which is a graphite powder having a specific surface area of 3 m2/g or smaller, an aspect ratio of 6 or lower, and a tap density of 0.8 g/cm3 or higher, or having a tap density of 0.8 g/cm3 or higher and an oxidation initiation temperature of 600 °C or higher, or having a bulk density of 0.8 g/cm3 or higher, a specific surface area of 3 m2/g or smaller, and an electrical resistivity in a specific powdery state of 0.06 Φcm or lower; and a cell containing it as a negative electrode material. The cell has a large discharge capacity, excellent suitability for charge/discharge cycles, and a high charge/discharge efficiency.

The composite graphite particles of the present invention comprises a core material consisting of graphite having a interlayer distance d(002) of 0.337 nm or less in which the intensity ratio ID/IG (R value) between the peak intensity (ID) in a range of 1300 to 1400 cm−1 and the peak intensity (IG) in a range of 1580 to 1620 cm−1 as measured by Raman spectroscopy spectra is from 0.01 to 0.1 and a carbonaceous surface layer in which the intensity ratio ID/IG(R value) between the peak intensity (ID) in a range of 1300 to 1400 cm−1 and the peak intensity (IG) in a range of 1580 to 1620 cm−1 as measured by Raman scattering spectroscopy is 0.2 or higher; wherein the peak intensity ratio I110/I004 between the peak intensity (I110) of face (110) and the peak intensity (I004) of face (004) obtained by XRD measurement on the graphite crystal is 0.2 or higher when the particles are mixed with a binder and pressure-molded to a density of 1.55 to 1.65 g/cm3.
