摘要:
A record carrier (1) comprises essentially circular tracks (20) concentrically located around a point of rotation (2). The record carrier (1) is divided into circular zones (4, 5, 6) comprising each m tracks (22), with m being an integer. Each track within a zone is subdivided into n sectors (8), with n being an integer which is constant per zone and which increases as the zone is more remote from the point of rotation (2). Each sector (8) comprises a header portion (9) and a data portion. The header portions (9) in radial direction in each zone are in line. In each zone the condition of m.n = l.k is satisfied, with l being an integer greater than or equal to 2 and being constant for each zone, and with k being an integer.

A unique and permanent identifier is provided for removable media. The identifier is preferably recorded in a previously unused or reserved portion of the media and can be generated from a combination of the originating drive serial number and the current date and time with a random number concatenated thereto. When a piece of media is loaded into a drive, the drive examines the reserved area for the presence of an identifier. If not present. the drive generates and records an identifier before performing whatever disk access operations have been requested. If the identifier is present, the drive is prevented from overwriting the identifier with a new one and the disk access operations are performed immediately. Once the media is provided with its identifier, the media, and any errors associated with the media, can be tracked throughout its life.

A method and apparatus for ensuring the proper position and orientation of a multi-disk cartridge (100), and for selectively locking the cartridge (100) while it is inserted in a disk drive (400) to prevent withdrawal of the cartridge (100) while the disk drive (400) is conveying one of the cartridge's disks. The disk drive of the invention includes a guide (402) to slidably receive a multi-disk cartridge (100). When the cartridge (100) is inserted in the guide (402), presence of the cartridge (100) in the drive (400) is detected by a position sensor (414). Having detected the presence of the cartridge (100), an orientation sensor (416) determines whether the cartridge (100) has been oriented properly. This prevents upside-down insertion of the cartridge (100), for example. With the cartridge (100) fully inserted into the guide (402) in a proper orientation, a locking mechanism (422) serves to lock the cartridge (100) in place at selected times. The cartridge (100) may be locked in place, for example, at all times when the cartridge (100) is inserted into the guide (402), or merely during sensitive operations of the disk drive (400).

A common bus architecture is disclosed which has truly distributed control. A plurality of bus interface units (BIU) are interconnected by the distributed system data bus (DSDB) which includes a clock line (4), a serial command line (CMD), a serial bus allocation line (BAL) and a two byte wide data bus (8). A central clock connected to the clock line which defines the message frame timing, is the only centralized "control" element in the system. Each BIU may in turn be connected to either one or several data processing units, an I/O port, or a bridge connecting to still another similar bus network. By prior arrangement, several BIUs will establish a set of relative priorities, commands and corresponding data transfer operations. The BIUs share the DSDB in a time division multiple access mode which requires them to agree to a time divided allocation of the common bus based upon their distributed assessment of the relative priorities of their pending messages. When a processor serviced by a first (talker) BIU wants to transmit data over the DSDB to a processor serviced by a second (listener) BIU, a three stage priority contention resolution operation takes place to obtain an exclusive allocation of the DSDB for the desired data transmission.

In an optical data storage device for storing data on a removable optical disk in a continuous sequence of sectors or blocks, the input data buffer may be subject to under-run. An under-run detector is disclosed which is responsive to the buffered data comprising less than a sector of data for indicating an under-run, and a padding provider is disclosed which is responsive to the under-run indication for providing padding characters for formatting into sectors. The sectors may be provided with headers indicating the sectors as padding. A reading device for reading the data sectors and providing the data to a host detects padding and prevents the padding data from transmission to the host.

An apparatus and method are provided for tracking the number of permanent and temporary errors, and spare sectors used as a result of the errors, on a per disk and per drive basis. During read/write operations, a determination is made as to whether the total number of spares used to replace defective sectors on a disk exceeds a predetermined limit. This limit can be different depending upon the type of disk in use, rewritable or WORM. If the limit is exceeded, diagnostics are preferably executed to ascertain the cause of the excess usage and appropriate corrective action, such as requesting that the disk and drive lens be cleaned, is then initiated. Moreover, an attempt can be made to recover used spare sectors on a rewritable disk.
