摘要:
A mailing machine includes a transport mechanism for transporting mail pieces along a transport path. Also included in the mailing machine are a printing device for printing a postage indicia on the mail pieces transported by the transport mechanism, and a print control mechanism coupled to the printing device to control the printing device. The postage indicia includes a barcode. The mailing machine further includes a reading device located along the transport path to read the barcode. The mailing machine also includes a comparing mechanism coupled to the print control mechanism and the reading device to compare data read from the barcode by the reading device with data received by the comparing mechanism from the print control mechanism.

Systems and methods for providing evidence of printing in metering systems even in the event of a print head failure are provided. Along with generating a primary image for an indicium that evidences payment, a secondary image for the indicium, identical to a corresponding portion of the primary image but at a lower density, with physical boundaries that are within the boundaries of the primary image, is also generated. The primary image is printed by a first nozzle array (46a), and the secondary image is printed by a second nozzle array (46b). Because the primary image completely overlaps the secondary image, the secondary image is undetectable if the primary image is properiy printed. The secondary image provides evidence of printing of the indicium that can be used to obtain a refund for the indicium in the event that the primary image was not printed due to failure of the first nozzle array (46a).

A printing system that dynamically adjusts the resolution at which printing will occur based on the lightness or darkness of the medium upon which the image will be printed is provided. The reflectivity of the medium upon which an image is to be printed is determined, and hence the relative lightness or darkness of the medium. The resolution at which the image will be printed is adjusted based on the determined reflectivity of the medium. For lighter colored mediums, sufficient contrast between the printed image and the medium upon which the image is printed can be maintained utilizing a lower resolution, while a higher resolution must be utilized to maintain sufficient contrast for darker colored mediums. Since it is not necessary to utilize the higher resolution for all mediums to ensure sufficient contrast is always provided, the amount of ink used by the printing system is reduced.

Disclosed herein is a method of detecting possible duplicate printing of postal indicia including receiving (100) image data for printing a current postal indicium, determining (105) a number of pixels that will be printed in a defined zone of the current postal indicium, obtaining (110) stored pixel count data that includes one or more stored pixel counts that each represents a number of pixels that were printed in the defined zone of a previously printed postal indicium, determining (115) whether the number of pixels equals any one of the stored pixel counts, initiating (120) one or more fraud prevention actions if it is determined that the number of pixels equals any one of the stored pixel counts, and printing (125) the current postal indicium if it is determined that the number of pixels does not equal any one of the stored pixel counts. Also disclosed is a mail processing system adapted to implement the method just described.

Methods and systems for using ink-jet technology for high speed printing are provided. Print growth between pixels in an image is significantly reduced or eliminated by adjusting the printing of the pixels based on the status of the following pixel to be printed, i.e., whether the following pixel is either black or white. If a black pixel, formed by a plurality of columns of dots, is being followed by a white pixel, the column of dots closest to the white pixel will not be printed, and the column of dots in the black pixel next to the column of dots closest to the white pixel are staggered such that the pixel appears filled despite the absence of the column of dots closest to the white pixel and will still be properly read as a black pixel by a scanner reading the image.
