Techniques to efficiently filter fragmented datagrams and route fragments are described. For each fragmented datagram, a filtering node obtains filter parameters as fragments for the datagram are received. When all filter parameters are available, the node applies one or more filters on the filter parameters to obtain a filter result for the datagram and stores the filter result in an entry in a routing table. Prior to obtaining the filter result, the node stores all fragments received for the datagram in a memory. When the filter result becomes available, the node processes all fragments already received for the datagram in accordance with the filter result. As each remaining fragment for the datagram is received, the node immediately processes the fragment in accordance with the filter result. When the last fragment is received, the node clears the memory and the routing table entry for the datagram.

A method for generating privacy IP address includes pregenerating a first privacy address and generating a second privacy address when the first privacy address is allocated to an application. Addresses may be shared by applications or unique to a single application. A deprecation timer is started when an application binds to an allocated privacy address, now when the privacy address is generated. To minimize traffic flow disruptions a deprecated address is not deleted while the address remains in use. By pregenerating privacy addresses, an address can be promptly allocated to an application with out delays incurred by confirming that a new address is not a duplicate on the system. The method can be implicated on any device using privacy addresses, including mobile handset devices.

Packet filtering is performed to detect for and discard malformed data packets that would be discarded by a wireless network if received from a wireless device. A cdma2000 network may restart a PPP session upon receiving (1) malformed data packets with source IPv4 addresses different from IPv4 addresses (if any) assigned to the wireless device or (2) malformed data packets with source IPv6 addresses having prefixes different from prefixes (if any) associated with the PPP session. The wireless device may receive data packets from a terminal equipment coupled to the wireless device and/or applications running at the wireless device. The wireless device may filter these data packets with packet filters to detect for malformed data packets with invalid IPv4 addresses, invalid IPv6 address prefixes, and so on. The wireless device discards malformed data packets and sends the remaining data packets to the wireless network.

Techniques for performing system selection based on a usage model that uses 'access strings', 'profiles', and 'activation strings' are described. Access strings are defined for wireless data services and provide a highly intuitive user interface. Each access string is associated with one or more profiles. Each profile includes various parameters needed to establish a specific data call. Each profile is further associated with an activation string that contains connection information for the data call. System selection is performed in two parts. In the first part, a wireless user views access strings for available data services, selects the access string for the desired data service, and returns the selected access string. In the second part, the wireless device selects a profile for a system most suited to provide the desired data service, from among all profiles associated with the selected access string.

A technique is described for determining configuration options negotiated for a wireless communications link employing a network model. The technique receives an input data stream from a wireless communications link employing a network model, the network model operating, e.g. to isolate an PPP-Rm link from an PPP-Km link. The input data stream includes one or more framed data packets containing information. The wireless communications link employing the network model is based on configuration options negotiated. The framed data packet(s) from the input data stream are detected and at least a portion of the information of the detected framed data packet(s) is examined when the configuration options of the wireless communications link employing the network model have been negotiated. In an embodiment, the IPCP configuration options like e.g. IP-address, Van Jacobson compression and Van Jacobson compression slot ID are determined by examining a portion of information of a predetermined number of framed data packets when the configuration options have been negociated.

Upon determining that the received packetized data comprises compressed data, the communicaiton device determines (S340) whether connection information exceeds a highest-numbered decompression slot from a plurality of decompression slots on said Um interface. The communciation device sets up (S330) a local decompression slot, int he communicaiton device, which corresponds to the connection information in order to maintain said compressionsate, wherein the local decompression slot is set up in response to determining (S325) that the connection information exceeds the highest-numbered decompression slot. In a wireless communication system, a method for early determination of network support for Mobile IP is disclosed. A mobile node is in communication with a wireless network. Then a test is performed for a disconnect condition wherein the disconnect condition is an early indication of network non-support for Mobile IP as identified by at least a requirement for authentication. Early indication relates to identification of the non-support for Mobile IP prior to or during network packet connection. If the disconnect condition is found, the mobile node disconnects from the wireless network. If the disconnect condition is not found, the mobile node stays connected to the wireless network.
