The controller (520) is arranged to operate by comparing the measured parameter with received parameter values (MIN_RX_PWR, MIN_TOT_PILOT), and controlling the receiver to receive again signals of the origination communication system (S1) based on the comparison of the measured parameter data and the received parameter data values and on the control data (RETURN_IF_FAIL). Method and apparatus for controlling transmission from mobile stations to base station on multiple access channels. A power control information packet formed from power control bits is transmitted from base station to mobile station. Power control bits in the packet have a position mapped to a selected access channel and to a time offset. The packet is received at a first mobile station. A message is then transmitted from the first mobile to the base on a first access channel and at a first time offset. The message is transmitted from the first mobile at a power level determined in response to a first power control bit in the packet.

A method and apparatus for high rate CDMA wireless communication in which a set. of individually gain adjusted subscriber channels are formed via the use of a set of orthogonal subchannel codes (W i ) having a small number of PN spreading chips per orthogonal waveform period. Data to be transmitted via one of the transmit channels is low code rate error correction encoded (134) and sequence repeated before being modulated with one of the subchannel codes, gain adjusted (152, 154, 156, 158), and summed (160), with data modulated using the other subchannel codes. The resulting summed data is modulated using a user long code an pseudorandom spreading code (PN code) and upconverted for transmission.

A method for performing hard handoff between communication systems is described, the method comprising receiving, at a mobile station, parameter data from an origination system; unsuccessfully attempting to acquire a destination system by hard handoff using the parameter data; determining that the destination system is available; searching to locate pilot offsets where base stations in the destination system are available; transmitting to the origination system information discovered during the searching; receiving updated parameter data from the origination system; and re-attempting to acquire the destination system by hard handoff using the updated parameter data.
