    摘要: An electrical device (1) which exhibits PTC behavior and which comprises a resistive element (7) electrically connected to first and second electrodes (3, 5). The resistive element is prepared from a composition comprising a curable polymeric component (9), a first particulate filler (13) which is both electrically conductive and magnetic, and an optional second particulate filler (15). The first particulate filler is dispersed in the polymeric component in discrete regions (11) which extend from the first electrode to the second electrode. Devices of the invention can be used as circuit protection devices or heaters. Also disclosed is a method of making an electrical component in which a composition comprising an electrically conductive and magnetic particulate filler is positioned on a layer which comprises a magnetic pattern to form an element, and is then cured so that discrete regions of the particulate filler form corresponding to the pattern.

    摘要: A conductive polymer composition which has a resistivity at 20 °C of at most 1.0 ohm-cm and a PTC anomaly of at least 104 contains at most 64 % by volume of a crystalline polymeric component and at least 36 % by volume of a particulate conductive filler. A preferred conductive filler is carbon black having a DBP number of 60 to 120 cm3/100 g. Compositions of the invention, as well as other conductive polymer compositions, are preferably prepared by a method in which the polymeric component and the filler are blended in a first step at a temperature greater than the melting temperature of the polymer, the mixture is then cooled, and the mixture is then mixed in a second step. The resulting composition has a PTC anomaly that is at least 1.2 times the PTC anomaly of the first mixture.

    摘要: Electrical devices, particularly circuit protection devices, contain conductive polymer elements whose edges are formed by breaking the conductive polymer element, along a desired path, without the introduction of any solid body into the element. The resulting cohesive failure of the conductive polymer produces a distinctive fractured surface. One method of preparing such devices involves etching fracture channels in the electrodes of a plaque containing a PTC conductive polymer element sandwiched between metal foil electrodes, and then snapping the plaque along the fracture channels to form individual devices. The figure illustrates a circuit protection device made in this way.
