The fuel/air ratio is determined from the signal of an exhaust gas probe, whose installation location is situated in the shared exhaust gas line system, while using an invertible model for thoroughly mixing the exhaust gases at the installation location of the exhaust gas probe. The method is characterized in that the rotation angle position of the exhaust gas probe at its installation location is taken into consideration when determining the individual cylinder lambda from the signal of the exhaust gas probe that is evaluated while using the inverted model.
