Spark discharge voltage follows a falling flank (11) for at least a predetermined period (B) of at least 0.1 ms during normal combustion of the fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine. Should combustion not take place, the voltage on the ignition coil falls to zero along a flank (12) from a point (A') and the absence of any subsequent discharge voltage at the end of the predetermined period (B) can be monitored to indicate that unburnt fuel will find its way to the exhaust system where it may burn and cause the exhaust system to overheat. Such exhaust system may contain a catalyser which could be destroyed by such overheating. This is prevented by using the result of monitoring the discharge voltage to interrupt the fuel supply to the engine, at least up to the following ignition operation.

Means (21) for recognizing and processing failures determine the frequency of the occurrence signals and emit a failure signal when the frequency thus determined exceeds a threshold value. A warning light is switched on when the failure signal is emitted. This device for recognizing spark failures has a simple design, since the ignition in all cylinders of an internal combustion engine (11) can be monitored at the same time with a single sensor. The device can also detect failures in the exhaust gas duct (12), not only spark failures.

An ignition system for internal combustion engines has a clamping circuit (10, 11, 12, 16) for limiting the primary voltage and protecting high-voltage conducting parts against destruction. The ignition system has a voltage clamping device for the ignition transistor (3), and the clamping voltage is variable depending on a load on the secondary side. The primary voltage (Up) is determined by an evaluation unit (9). When the secondary laod is high, a high clamping voltage is applied, and when the secondary load is low, a low clamping voltage is applied. Moreover, the evaluation (23-28) of the primary voltage enables to diagnose defects in the ignition system.
