Fuel can be directly injected into the combustion chamber by an injection valve (9) in a first operating mode during an induction phase or in a second operating mode during a compression phase, and the fuel can be ignited by a spark plug (10). An air/fuel mixture can be fed to the combustion chamber (4) via a tank ventilation assembly (15, 16, 17). The internal combustion engine (1) is controlled and/or regulated by the control device (18) in such a way that, in the second operating mode, a lean air/fuel mixture is drawn into the combustion chamber (4) via the throttle valve (11) and via the tank ventilation assembly (15, 16, 17) and is ignited by fuel which is additionally injected into the combustion chamber (4) and ignited therein.
