The invention relates to a method for controlling the distance from a vehicle (F) to a preceding vehicle (P). The distance (Dist) and the relative speed of the preceding vehicle (P) are measured and the distance is controlled according to a distance regulating mode by accelerating or decelerating the vehicle (F) to reach a predetermined desired distance (Dsoll). The inventive method is characterised in that the deceleration permitted when controlling the distance is limited and that distance control is changed into distance limitation to a minimal distance (Dmin) in situations, wherein the desired distance (Dsoll) cannot be maintained by means of said limited deceleration, whereby said minimal distance is smaller than the desired distance. After the minimal distance has been reached, the vehicle (F) is further slowed down in such a way that the distance is increased until the desired distance is reached.

The invention also relates to a computer program and to a free parking space assistance system (10) which is suitable for carrying out said method.
