An error signal detection method and apparatus for an optical recording/reproducing system are provided. The error signal detection method includes: (a) detecting light incident through an objective lens (7) after having been reflected and diffracted from a recording medium (10), as eight light portions arranged in a 2 × 4 matrix, including four inner light portions (A2, B2, C2, D2), and four outer light portions (A1, B1, C1, D1) around the corresponding inner light portions, wherein the row and column of the matrix are parallel to the tangential and radial direction of the recording medium (10), respectively; (b) calculating at least one first sum signal by summing a detection signal from at least one outer light portion located in a first diagonal direction, and a detection signal from at least one inner light portion located in a second diagonal direction; (c) calculating at least one second sum signal by summing a detection signal from at least one inner light portion located in the first diagonal direction, and a detection signal from at least one outer light portion located in the second diagonal direction; and (d) comparing the phases of the first and second sum signals and outputting at least one phase comparison signal, wherein a tilt error signal is detected from the phase comparison signal. The tilt error signal detected using the method by the error signal detection apparatus has a high signal-to-noise ratio, and is less affected by detracking.

A improved method and apparatus for tracking error detection capable of enhancing accuracy in a tracking error detection with introduction of a phase locked loop (PLL) into a conventional differential phase detection tracking error (DPD TE) method are described. The tracking error detecting apparatus for producing a tacking error signal as a difference signal of optical detection signals generated from more than two optical detectors (302) positioned along a diagonal line from a track center includes binarizers (308) for binarizing each of outputs of the optical detectors (302), PLLs (310) for generating clock signal synchronized with each of the output of the binarizers (308), a phase difference detector (312) for detecting a phase difference between the synchronized signals output from the PLLs (310), and low-pass filters (314) for filtering the output of the phase difference detector to output the result as the tracking error signal. The tracking error detecting apparatus is capable of generating a tracking error signal which is not dependent on the lengths of pits or marks recorded on an optical disk, so that the reliability of a tracking error signal can be enhanced.

The apparatus can be used together with a servo error generator since a high density disc is distinguished from a low density disc using the light receiving signal generated by a photodetector.

A physical identification data (PID) addressing method using a wobble signal, a wobble address encoding circuit, a method and circuit for detecting the wobble address and a recording medium are provided. Groove tracks are classified into odd groove tracks and even groove tracks. Address information indicating physical identification information is phase modulated using wobble signals having a predetermined phase difference between two adjacent groove tracks, and recorded in each groove track so that address information modulated using the wobble signals having the phase difference of 90° between adjacent two groove tracks can be a quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal. Accordingly, a larger amount of data can be recorded in the recording medium, and since an interval in which a wobble signal disappears is not caused, recovery of a wobble clock signal can be advantageously performed.
