An optical fiber ferrule assembly equipped with an angular index (2) for indicating a polarization plane of an optical fiber (4). The assembly comprises a polarization plane maintaining optical fiber (4), an optical fiber ferrule (1) for accommodating the optical fiber so that the optical fiber is fixed thereto in a state that a tip end surface of the optical fiber is exposed, and an angular index member (2). The angular index member is rotatable with respect to the ferrule (1) and fixed at a constant angle with respect to a polarization plane of said optical fiber (4). The angular index member (2) and the optical fiber ferrule (1) temporarily assembled, to which the optical fiber (4) is fixed, are connected with each other and one of them is fixed, and a tip end surface of the optical fiber is enlarged for observation to decide the polarization plane thereof on the basis of its configuration, and they are relatively rotated and fixed to each other so that the angular index makes a constant angle relative to the polarization plane.

An optical fiber ferrule (F 1 ,F 2 ) with four optical fiber elements (22,23) and an optical coupler constructed using the optical fiber ferrules are disclosed. The optical fiber ferrule (F 1, F 2 ) for an optical coupler has a throughhole whose center line is in parallel to a reference on the ferrule, the ends of optical fiber elements (22,23) are inserted from one end of the throughhole to the other end thereof, wherein the relation between diameter of the end-face and diameter of the optical fiber element (22,23) is defined by the following formula; d=(2 1/2 +1)d 1 + δ. In the formula: d denotes diameter of the throughhole at the center of the ferrule end-face, d 1 denotes diameter of the optical fiber element (22,23), and δ denotes allowance. The optical coupler consists of the two optical fiber ferrules (F 1 ,F 2 ), a pair of graded index rod lenses (28,29), a thin film (30) which partly transmits incident light and reflects the remainder, and fastening means.
