A front light (100) and a reflecting liquid crystal display of the present invention includes a dot light emitting source (101), and a light guiding body (104) having a light incident surface (104a) to which light from the dot light emitting source (101) is incident and a light outgoing surface (104b) from which the incident light outgoes, and light from the dot light emitting source (101) is in a linearly emitting state at least when incident onto the light incident surface (104a). By so doing, it is possible to provide bright, inexpensive, low-power consuming front light (100) and reflecting liquid crystal display which do not cause shadows or a moire fringe from the dot light emitting source (101), or a light-dark difference in luminance.

A liquid crystal light valve (10) and a various information processors is provided. The processors have the liquid crystal light valve (10) in which information formed in a liquid crystal layer (22) and corresponding to address light can be read as an optical signal and can be directly read as an electric signal. A liquid crystal light valve (10) has a glass substrate (11,12), a transparent electrode (14), an opposite electrode (15), an optical waveguide (16), a photoconductive layer (17), a light interrupting layer (18), an orientational film (19,20), a spacer and a liquid crystal layer (22). The optical waveguide (16) is composed of a lower clad layer (26), a core layer (27) and a clad layer (28). A light source (30) and a photodetector (29) are connected to both ends of the optical waveguide (16). For example, the light source (30) is constructed by a laser, a light emitting diode (LED), etc. The light source (30) is connected to the optical waveguide (16) such that a polarized wave can be guided to the optical waveguide (16). For example, the photodetector (29) is constructed by an a-Si:H diode, and a-SiGe:H diode, etc. in accordance with a wavelength of the light source (30). The photodetector (29) is connected to the optical waveguide (16) so as to receive light therefrom.
