A compact illuminator for a direct part marking (DPM) scanner is provided to perform dual-field, multi-color, multidirectional, multi-distance illumination functions. The illuminator can selectively provide dark field and bright field illumination with broad spectrum white or narrow band color, in combination with directions for near contact distance as well as far distance barcode readings. Specifically, illuminator includes a front edge illuminator with customized LED optics, a dome diffuser, an LED board assembly, and a reflective sleeve surrounding the dome diffuser. The board assembly can further include an alternative on/off plural point source bright field spot illuminating system. A method for scanning DPM indicia focuses on generating illumination light using an illumination assembly, illuminating the DPM indicia, detecting reflected and/or scattered light, and capturing under different illumination conditions and combining at least two consecutive images of the DPM indicia, followed by processing and decoding the obtained image.

The invention features an image reader (100) and a corresponding method for capturing a sharp distortion free image of a target, such as a one or two-dimensional bar code. In one embodiment, the image reader (100) comprises a two-dimensional CMOS based image sensor array (182), a timing module, an illumination module (104), and a control module (112). The time during which the target is illuminated is referred to as the illumination period. The capture of the image by the image sensor array (182) is driven by the timing module that, in one embodiment, is able to simultaneously expose substantially all of the pixels in the array. The time during which the pixels are collectively activated to photo-convert incident light into charge defines the exposure period for the sensor array. In one embodiment, at least a portion of the exposure period occurs during the illumination period.

A digital data communication system enables host computer to communicate with a great number of data terminals having specified functions. Communication from the host computer proceeds through a medium or long distance, high power transceiver and through a multiplex system to one of a number of portable communication devices. The communication devices preferably contain internal power supplies, such as rechargeable NiCad battery packs. The devices may be carried on a person's belt, or may be mounted within or on a service vehicle, for example, a forklift truck for use in warehouse operations or a merchandise delivery route vehicle. The communication devices are adapted to function as communication relay devices between the host computer and selected ones of the data terminals. Each communication device includes a first type, low power transceiver to communicate within a first channel and at a low power transmission level with a selected number of the data terminals which also feature such first type transceivers. Each communication device further includes a high power transceiver to communicate within a second channel with the transceiver of the host computer. A microprocessor operated address controller allows the communication device to control low power communication among the data terminals by receiving and re-transmitting locally directed communications. The controller and the controlling protocol further relays data messages between the low power communication level and host computer. In operation the device receives data messages on one of the transceivers and transmits them on the other. The communication device further may contain sufficient memory capacity to permit periodic batch type data transmission between the host computer and the communication device. The ability to switch from a high power, high precision and high cost transmission system to a low power, low precision and low cost transmission system at the level at which a great number of data terminal devices are used provides system flexibility at a reasonable cost.

A light source illuminates the object to be imaged. A timing control circuit switches the light source on and off, and controls the transfer gates (TG1,TG2) between the photodiode and the first and second CCD in such a way that the first CCD accumulates charges generated with the light source off, and the second CCD generates charges generated with the light source on. A differential amplifier (334) produces a difference signal, thereby eliminating the effect of any background light.

Apparatus, such as bar code and optical readers utilizing such a matrix are shown, and are insensitive to the diffusion and laminate effects. In alternate embodiments the matrix (10) is coupled to remote sensors (94) or another similar matrix to provide optical communication and interchange devices having high bandwidth.
