A device which is capable of storing moving picture data received from each terminal and providing each terminal with video information to be reproducible by rapidly forwarding or reversing at any desired speed independent of usable terminals. A video storage type communication device 30 with a receiving portion 35 and a transmitting portion 38 transmits and receives video data over a communication network 10 to and from each terminal 1 - n. A coded video data received from terminals 1 - n is stored as it is in a first storage portion 32 and, at the same time, the data converted into specially reproducible video information is stored in the second storage portion 33. At the time of reproducing, the reproduction control portion 35 controls the reproduction selector switch 36 to obtain the video data from the first storage portion 32 or the second storage portion 33, changing the reproduction mode from ordinary to the rapid forwarding/reversing and vice versa. The specially reproducible video generating portion 34 successively restores coded video data received through the receiving portion 31, encodes again the restored data by intraframe, interframe or still-picture coding method to generate video information to be reproducible in special mode such as reproduction by rapid forwarding or reversing.

The present invention makes it possible to execute communication between an image-information storage and a terminal even in case they have different image formats. An image data delivery request transmitted from any of terminals (11a - 11c) and received by a receiving portion (13) includes an information indicating that the terminal has a source format CIF or QCIF. This information is transferred to a communication control portion (14) which informs an source format control portion (17) of the source format CIF or QCIF of the terminal. When the terminal has the CIF source format, the required data transmitted from an image-information storage device (19) are transmitted through a transmitter portion to the terminal. When the terminal 11d has the QCIF source format, a part of the image data transferred from the image-information storage device (19) is extracted and converted into data of QCIF format by the source format control portion (17). The converted data of QCIF source format are then transmitted through a transmitting portion (15) to the terminal (11d).

A channel data separating portion (91) splits a multiplexed input into audio/video and other components. An error correction portion (92) corrects an error of the video data outputted from the channel data demultiplexing portion (91). A video frame extracting portion (93) extracts a video frame outputted from the error correction portion (92). A packet assembling portion (94) assembles a packet from the video data outputted from the video frame extracting portion (93) and the audio data outputted from the data demultiplexing portion (91). A storage portion stores therein the packet outputted from the packet assembling portion (94). Consequently, video data can be stored by video frames.
