Isononadiene (2,6-dimethyl-1,5-heptadiene) and/or 2,6,10-trimethyl-1,5,9-undeca- triene can be obtained by reacting cis-1,4-polyisoprene with isobutene in the presence of a heterogeneous disproportionation catalyst. Also included are the dienes and/or trienes produced by the defined process.

The hydrowax thus produced is a very suitable feedstock for a steam cracker for the production of ethene. The hydrowax can also be very suitably applied as a feed for the production of lubricating base oils.
