Telecommunications systems comprise redundancies in subassemblies or lines from data traffic units and clock handling units in order to safeguard data traffic. When setting up units such as clock pulse sources, the redundancy of the data traffic and of the clock handling have to be separately specified. This can lead to a situation in which only the data traffic is redundant, but not the clock handling. The invention should increase the operational reliability of the telecommunications system. Firstly, a redundancy is determined and set up for either a portion of the data traffic units or for a portion of the clock handling units. One redundancy which corresponds to the determined redundancy is then likewise set up for the other portion. The inventive telecommunications system comprises means for setting up a data traffic redundancy and means for setting up a clock pulse redundancy which are interconnected.

To this end, the telecommunications systems receive the clock pulse and an additional piece of information from the received data stream, said piece of information describing the quality of the clock signal. In telecommunications systems which are connected to a plurality of different standardized transmission networks, different algorithms in the master processor are required for evaluating the differently formatted clock pulse quality data. The invention should simplify the communication of clock pulse qualities. The different interface cards (4-10) comprise converters (22-28) which convert the clock pulse quality information between a transmission network specific format and an independent format. Only one sub-unit (30) for processing all clock pulse qualities is located in said master processor (2). The method for synchronizing a telecommunication systems comprises a step for converting the transmission network specific data into messages of an independent format. Telecommunications systems have to be synchronized to an external clock pulse source. To this end, at least two reference clocks are used which are redundant to one another. The master processor is informed when a reference clock fails. Said master processor subsequently instructs the master clock generator to switch to a redundant reference clock. Due to the time-delay associated therewith, data errors can occur on the transmission link. The invention should reduce the susceptibility of the telecommunications system to faults. The peripheral platforms of the telecommunications system determine the decrease in quality or the failure of a clock pulse signal with the aid of a quality detector (6), and they interrupt the relay of the clock pulse signal to the master clock generator (2). The master clock generator (2) detects the interruption by using an interruption detector (7) and switches to a redundant reference clock. The method for producing a master clock comprises the following steps: detecting clock pulse qualities, and interrupting the clock pulse signal if the quality thereof decreases.

The invention relates to a digital transmission system in which an internal clock-pulse is generated by a central clock-pulse generator which operates in master/slave mode. In case of signal noise on the connecting cable the clock-slave assumes the master role. If the previous master receives a signal via the connecting cable it recognizes that it is longer master and synchronizes its clock pulse in step with that of the new master. This prevents errors if the previous clock master fails or is disconnected.
