The invention relates to a process for the continuous casting of a slab (1), in particular of steel, wherein the cast slab (1) is conveyed through a furnace (2) and the slab (1) is subjected to a descaling operation. To increase the quality of the slab by reducing scale, the invention provides for the slab surface to undergo reduction in at least one section (3) of the furnace (2) as a result of an atmosphere consisting of an inert gas and hydrogen (H 2 ) or of pure hydrogen being maintained in said section (3) of the furnace (2). The invention further relates to an apparatus for the continuous casting of a slab.

The aim of the invention is to improve the surface quality of slabs (5) having a thickness of up to 400 mm, that are produced in a continuous process from continuous casting to hot-rolling, for example according to the CSP method, by means of an in-line surface treatment. To this end, a defined surface layer of the slab (5) with a layer thickness per slab side of up to 4 mm is oxidised in a targeted manner by an oxidising flame or an oxidising gas mixture applied to the upper and lower sides of the slab (5) by means of an oxidation device containing nozzles or a similar device, said layer being removed later on during the process. The oxidation product on the slab surface can be solid or liquid.

The aim of the invention is achieved such that the spray nozzles (12), which are instrumental in descaling the steel material (2) in the descaling device (8), are designed as static nozzles and as dynamic or rotating nozzles.
