An electronic control unit is used to control the opening period of a single point fuel injector by means of the generation of a fuel metering electrical pulse. The pulse length is determined by the sensing of inter alia engine loading (e. g. air flow rate or absolute manifold pressure) and engine speed. The engine loading signal is sampled at fixed intervals and average over the samples taken between engine firings. The number of samples used in the averaging procedure reduces with increasing engine speed. An acceleration enrichment procedure is also conducted by the control unit comprising a proportional increase in pulse width for a number of cycles followed by a smaller increase over successive cycles.
