An improved fuel filter cartridge (12) comprises a housing (21) which defines an opening, a filter element (30) enclosed within the housing (21), and a flow-rever-sing insert (40) disposed within the housing (21) between the opening and the filter element (30). The improved filter cartridge (21) is preferably used with a conventional header (10) of the type having a fuel entry port (16), a fuel exit port (14), a central first conduit (22) for interiorly defining a first axial fuel passage which is in fluid communication with the entry port (16) of the header. Headers used with the improved filter cartridge also include a second conduit (24) surrounding and cooperating with the first conduit (22) to define a second axial fuel passage therebetween, the second fuel passage being in fluid communication with the exit port (14) of the header, and a base (20) for mounting the filter cartridge (12) thereto. When the filter cartridge (12) is mounted to the base (20) of the header, the insert (40), filter element (30) and housing (21) cooperate to define a first chamber (34) in communication with the first conduit (22) of the header and to define a second chamber (32) in communication with the second conduit (24) of the header. Fuel delivered to the exit port (14) of the header progressively flows through the second conduit (24), is guided radially outwardly by the insert (40), flows through the filter element (30), flows through the first conduit (22) and, finally, flows into the entry port (16) of the header. Methods of using the improved filter cartridge (12) are also disclosed.

A fuel filter assembly (22) employs a hand primer (10) and a disposable filter cartridge (18) mounted to a header (14). The filter cartridge (18) has a filter element (36) which defines an interior chamber (42) for receiving the filtered fuel. The hand primer includes a diaphragm (48) which cooperates with the header to define a reservoir (46) and a valve plate (66) having a plurality of orifices and an axial opening for providing fluid communication between an exit passage of the header and the reservoir (46) and between the chamber (42) and the reservoir (46), respectively. A first check valve (118) is mounted in the opening and a second check valve (140) is mounted in an axial bore in the first check valve. The first and second check valves (118, 140) are moveable between an open position for allowing flow through the orifices of the valve plate (66) and orifices in the first check valve (118), respectively, and a closed position for preventing such flow. The filter assembly (22) is primed by pushing the diaphragm (48) downwards, creating a high pressure which moves the first check valve (118) to the open position and the second check valve (140) to the closed position, causing trapped air to be expelled through the orifices and the exit passage. Removing the downwards force allows a spring (64) to return to bias the diaphragm (48) upwards, creating a low pressure which moves the first check valve (118) to the closed position and the second check valve (140) to the open position, and drawing fuel from the interior chamber (42).
