A process for producing a hydroxy-containing alkylated aromatic compound comprising reacting aromatic compound having at least one hydroxyl group with alkylating agent characterised in that the reaction is conducted in the liquid phase in the presence of heteropoly acid. The heteropolyacid (e.g. silicotungstic acid) catalyst gives good selectivity, conversion and yields, is substantially non-corrosive, and is readily recovered for re-use. A regulated amount of water is preferably maintained in the reaction system for best efficiency.

The invention provides a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine derivative represented by the formula (l). wherein R, and R 2 independently represent a hydrogen atom or methyl group, R 3 represents an alkylene group having one to four carbon atoms. These derivatives, which may be accompanied by the corresponding monoester derivative when prepared by the described method, are effective photo-stabilizers for synthetic resins.
