An ethylene-α-olefin copolymer comprising ethylene and one or more α-olefin having from 3 to 10 carbon atoms, the copolymer having an α-olefin content of from 1.0 to 8.0 mol%, a density of from 0.900 to 0.930 g/cm³, and a melt flow rate of from 0.1 to 100 g/10 min., the programmed-temperature thermogram (see the drawings) of said copolymer as determined with a differential scanning calorimeter after being completely melted and then gradually cooled showing an endothermic peak (a) in a range of from 75° to 100°C and an endothermic peak (b) in a range of from 120° to 140°C, with the ratio of endotherm at the endothermic peak (b) to endotherm at the endothermic peak (a) being from 0.03 to 2.0. A mixture is also made of 60 - 99 parts of a random copolymer of ethylene and an α-olefin and 1 - 40 parts of high-density polyethylene. The copolymer or mixture is extruded or blown to form a film having excellent physical properties required for packaging film.

Ethylene (35-60 mols) and a C 3-10 a-olefin (65-40 mols) are copolymerized at a temperature of 40 to 80°C with a catalyst of (a) an oxyvanadium compound, (b) an organoaluminium compound and (c) a halogenated hydrocarbon ester, e.g. a perchlorocrotonic acid ester, in a mol ratio of (b) to (a) of ≧ 2.5 and of (c) to (a) of ≧ 1.5, in a hydrocarbon solvent. The polymer has a molar ratio of ethylene: a-olefin of 88:12 - 98:2, a number average mol. wt. of 35,000 - 80,000 and a ratio of wt. number average mol wt. of 1.8:1 - 3.0:1 determined by GPC. It has good transparency and is moldable to a film which is heat-sealable at low temperature.

The organic phase is then separated and washed with water and the polymer is recovered therefrom. The catalyst residue is thus reduced to very low levels, so that the copolymer is not affected thereby.

An inert hydrocarbon catalyst is a mixture of 1 mol of (A) a reaction product obtained by reacting in an inert hydrocarbon solvent (a) 1 mol of at least one V compound VO(OR) m X 3-m wherein R is a hydrocarbon group, X a halogen atom and m a real number of from 0 to 3 (preferably 0), and (b) 0.5 to 1.4 mols of a dihydroxy hydrocarbon compound constituted of a C2-12 straight chain hydrocarbon skeleton having a hydroxyl group at each end terminal and at least one hydrocarbon branch bonded to said hydrocarbon skeleton, and 2 to 500 mols of (B) at least one organoaluminum compound represented by R′ n AℓX′ 3-n wherein R′ is a hydrocarbon group, X′ a halogen atom; and n a real number more than 0 and less than 3. The catalyst is dissolved in an aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. hexane) to which is added an olefin (e.g. α-olefin alone or with ethylene and/or a polyene), to polymerise, at 0- 100°C under pressure of 5-50 kg/cm² to produce olefinic hydrocarbon polymers having narrow distributions of molecular weight and composition with high efficiency and high polymerization activity, without obstruction or contamination of equipment due to precipitation of catalyst.
