(A) a solid catalyst component containing a tetra-valent titanium obtained by treating a magnesium compound having an Mg-O bond in its molecule with a titanium halide; (B) an organoaluminum compound; and (C) an organosilicon compound represented by the general formula R 1 R 2 Si(OR 3 ) 2 wherein R 1 represents a hydrocarbon group having 4 to 30 carbon atoms wherein a carbon bonded directly to Si is a tertiary carbon, R 2 represents a straight chain hydrocarbon group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms and R 3 represents a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, or the general formula R 4 R 5 Si(OR 6 ) 2 wherein R 4 and R 5 are hydrocarbon groups having an alicyclic hydrocarbon having 5 carbon atoms as a basic structure, R 4 and R 5 may be the same or different, and R 6 represents a hydrocarbon group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and a process for producing α-olefin with said catalyst.

An inert hydrocarbon catalyst is a mixture of 1 mol of (A) a reaction product obtained by reacting in an inert hydrocarbon solvent (a) 1 mol of at least one V compound VO(OR) m X 3-m wherein R is a hydrocarbon group, X a halogen atom and m a real number of from 0 to 3 (preferably 0), and (b) 0.5 to 1.4 mols of a dihydroxy hydrocarbon compound constituted of a C2-12 straight chain hydrocarbon skeleton having a hydroxyl group at each end terminal and at least one hydrocarbon branch bonded to said hydrocarbon skeleton, and 2 to 500 mols of (B) at least one organoaluminum compound represented by R′ n AℓX′ 3-n wherein R′ is a hydrocarbon group, X′ a halogen atom; and n a real number more than 0 and less than 3. The catalyst is dissolved in an aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. hexane) to which is added an olefin (e.g. α-olefin alone or with ethylene and/or a polyene), to polymerise, at 0- 100°C under pressure of 5-50 kg/cm² to produce olefinic hydrocarbon polymers having narrow distributions of molecular weight and composition with high efficiency and high polymerization activity, without obstruction or contamination of equipment due to precipitation of catalyst.

A process for preparing modified diene polymer rubbers having an increased impact resilience and a reduced hardness at low temperatures and useful as rubber materials for automobile tires and other industries which comprises producing an alkali metal-containing conjugated diene polymer, and reacting the alkali metal-containing polymer with a modifier selected from the group consisting of an acrylamide compound of the formula: wherein R¹ is hydrogen atom or methyl group, R² and R³ are independently an alkyl group and n is an integer, and an aminovinylsilane compound of the formula: wherein R⁴ to R⁸ are independently an alkyl group, said alkali metal-containing diene polymer being prepared by a living anionic polymerization using an alkali metal-based catalyst or by an addition reaction of a diene polymer having conjugated diene units and an alkali metal-based catalyst in a hydrocarbon solvent. The modified diene polymers can be incorporated with usual rubber additives and with or without other rubbers to provide rubber compositions for various purposes, and the cured products show an increased impact resilience and a reduced hardness at low temperatures.
