    wherein

    R 1 represents a C1 - C8 alkyl group;
    R 2 represents a hydrogen atom, a C1 - C8 alkyl group, a halogen atom, a hydroxy group or a C1 - C8 alkoxy group;
    R 3 represents an aryl group or a C1 - C8 alkyl group, which alkyl group is unsubstituted or substituted by an aryl group;
    n represents an integer from 1 to 4; and
    a and b, which are the same or different, represent R or S ,
    by an optical resolution method, and a process for producing an optically active cyclic amino acid using the compound of formula (I).
